As we undertake to keep up with the rest of the world and technology... we will attempt to keep our thoughts penned regularly for you here on our blog. Most importantly, we would like this to be a reflection of the love of our Faithful Saviour, Jesus Christ.

A Time of Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for~

  • our precious gift in our Lord and Savior!
  • another precious gift in David--and the fact that he has become far sweeter than the first 5 months of life!
  • a new, more interesting job for Michael and one where he has a much better commute
  • electricity at home! (I know this sounds funny, but when our fridge cycles and shuts off for a few minutes, I often find myself checking the clock to make certain we still have electricity--close to a month last year without it still makes me a bit gunshy)
  • a so-very-smooth check-in/airport time last Wednesday night
We left our house a bit earlier than intended (which is always a bit of a plus), and arrived and the ParknRide only to be the beginning of a VERY large influx. Since we arrived a bit early, we were able to get onto the airport shuttle rather quickly and over to the airport. On the shuttle, we discovered that we were the only couple of 10 or so that were going to terminal B. (all others disembarked at terminal E--where they were checking in the usual international AND all of the terminal C passengers...the largest terminal in the airport) While I have never understood why IAH (a large international airport) and IAD (an even larger international airport) fly express planes between the two of them, I was more than happy that night! We missed all the traffic that night at terminal E and were able to go through security even faster than many times! They ignored the three sippy cups of liquid (despite me telling them they were there). They ignored David entirely (no patting down of diapers or somesuch). They basically entirely ignored our 4 large carry-ons and stroller and we were on our way in minutes. We headed to the gate and found that it was a wing off of a wingMor off of a wing. (I promise, you never would have known it was there had you not been looking). Unlike most of the rest of the aiport, there were loads of open seating and a large area for David to run around in while still remaining contained! What a blessing!!! The flight itself was not entirely smooth, but once David got used to the plane, fussed for about 45 minutes since it was way past his bedtime but he did not want to sleep, he finally did fall asleep and slept for the rest of the 1 1/2 hours. This trip was really easy, and I know it was due to much prayer on the part of many friends and family. Thank you! Please pray that tomorrow's flight is as smooth (I anticipate more trouble since we will be leaving from the ever-bureaucratic DC and it will not be David's bedtime).

More on our Thanksgiving visit coming later...

Party Crashers

I promise I do have more of a life than just David...

Here is a tale of our time out without him last night. Michael and I headed to a law firm's "holiday" party. This firm has interacted with Michael's company and so Michael was picked as the company representative to attend and schmooze. We arrived, and I felt a bit like a little child who is party crashing on an adult's party. Neither of us knew anyone there, and it was (for the most part) a rather small intimate party where most people knew each other. Michael introduced himself and tried to make a few contacts. After a few minutes, I opted to sit in the back of the room and munch on some of the splendid hors d'oeuvres. I chatted briefly with a few folks but after the complication that came up over and over in explaining how I came to be there, I gave up and just people-watched. More than once I felt like the odd outsider. However, the highlight of the night came when we were standing in the hall chatting with a fellow. An older couple, that had also located themselves in the back of the room by the food and pretty much kept to themselves the entire time, came up to me on their way out the door. "Thank you so much for having us." Without even thinking, I responded, "Thanks for coming." Perhaps they were the real party crashers???

Communication

Interestingly, after I posted in his 15 month post that David stopped saying real words, he began again with a vengence.

In fact, this week, he has added a whole list of words to his repertoire! :)

This now includes:

  • ba-ba-ba (bye-bye)
  • Night (Goodnight)
  • Mo (more--to which he is now doing the sign while saying it verbally too--unfortunately though, it is not always when he really wants more though)
  • Ta U(Thank You--very sweet!)
  • Beep (for a car sound)
  • not to mention the old stand-bys back in play now: Daddy, Ball, Kitty Cat, Uh-Oh, and Hi
  • So much more fun to interact with him now! He also really understands so many instructions: take off shoes, put on shoes, give ___ to Mama, come here (not always so obedient yet), eat, go bye-bye, brush hair, and brush teeth. The last one is funny since we have only remembered to brush his teeth a couple of times but the last time I did it I told him, "Let's brush your teeth." Immediately, he ran to the bathroom and whined until I got his toothbrush down for him to brush his teeth. It amazes me he remembered the difference between brushing his hair and his teeth. He picks up so much on everything we say!

    Trouble in a pint-size

Well, after the last post, I am not sure how "pint-sized" David is, but...

Here is a glimpse of some moments yesterday.

    • While I was trying to get Michael some needed information online, I left David in the other room to play. He was rather quiet which made me wonder so I headed into the other room. I was greeted by a giggling little boy rushing at me with a toilet brush in his hand. Yuck! I took it from him to replace in the bathroom. I was greeted by this sight (minus the toilet brush) and a little boy who turned a bit more sheepish.
    • Next, I went back to finish up my chore for Michael on the computer and heard David climbing the stairs. Fine. He climbs well now (and comes back down) and there is not much he can get into upstairs................except the tub. Literally. He climbed in the tub, which happened to still have puddles from the night before. I heard a crash and went upstairs to investigate. He was holding the shampoo bottle, about to turn it over and squeeze. His entire backside and socks were drenched.
    • David, once changed, adjourned to the family room to play, but instead of the toys, it was the shoes that attracted the attention. All our shoes, neatly placed in our shoe shelf, were pulled out and tried on of size.
    • Michael came home early and wanted my help cleaning out the garage. (while David was up--uh-oh) Meanwhile, David walked around pulling out scrap lumber and beating it on the cars as he passed, and waving it as he ran down the driveway.
    • David did learn to say the word "more" though as he practiced it while eating almost all of my free birthday scoop of coconut ice cream from Baskin Robbins. I promise, the earlier mischief was not prompted by sugar. This scoop was after nightfall.
    Goodnight, baby!

To the love of lifting weights

Why is it so much more enjoyable to lift my 25 pound baby rather than do 25 pound reps with weights?

David came back from the doctor yesterday with a good report (and perhaps top molars coming in?) He is now 25 pounds 4 oz. (still the 50-75%ile). His head cirumference was 46 3/4 cm (only the 25-50%ile). The biggest shocker was his height! He is 32 1/2" which is the 75-90%ile. No wonder he looks practically the same size as many kids a good 6 months older!

(and yes, that is a ringbox in the hands and a headband around the neck. Both he stole from a bathroom drawer. It was his choice to sport the headband that way.)

    Let me introduce you to...

    Big Mouth Billy Bass!

He serves his purpose quite well as a changing time distraction...and sometimes just a dancing buddy.

One Little Monkey got out of his cage...

We went to the zoo yesterday with our Sunday school class.

We got to see quite a bit before the little ones started to melt down, including...

An ugly reptile with a long serpentine tongue...

    Giraffes...

    Elephants...

    Beautiful scenery and exotic flowers...

The seal show (Sarabeth and David were fascinated)... Some birds--including the flamingo, a goose who posed, and the evil-looking shoebill...

    The hooved animals...

The lions (who were incidentally lying in the exact same place as last time--we joked about them being stuffed), and we even went into the mouth of a lion for a drink...

The bears (not so fierce-looking and rather lethargic)...

    A tiger...

And finally the primates, including a loose one...

    What a fun day!

    Off to the races...

Not sure who won, but the cousins raced up and down the aisles of HEB yesterday. What fun!

    Builder's Billboard

One of the blogs I read posted the video below a while back. It makes me smile! And validates my thoughts about the billboard that used to be on Kuykendahl just south of 1960. Did anyone else think that the garage and windows on the new home builder's billboard looked like a smiley face?

    15 months strong

David, You are now 15 months. Where has the time flown?!

This month has been much sweeter. Yes, there are still days of challenge, but on the whole, you have been better rested, more cheerful and far more content! Even your teachers at church always comment now about how much they love you AND HOW SWEET YOU ARE!!! What a change from the early days!

We did have a few moments of despair right after the time change, but on the whole, you are mostly back to sleeping 12 hours at night until 6:30 or sometimes later (it used to be 7:00) You also still nap really well with 2 1/2-3 hours in the afternoon.

This month has been focused on your physical development an awful lot. You can now run and climb anywhere! Your latest favorite pasttime is to climb on the furniture--couch, chair, etc...---and then stand up and laugh. You go up and down stairs as a regular part of your day now. You also love to climb in and out of your toybox. (and the tub too as you rarely take long baths anymore--you are too eager to be out and playing!)

Your favorite toys are still balls, and all our old-cast offs (see last month), to now include your Leap Frog Farm Fridge and a shape sorter. You love to be outside too. You also like your duplo legos...already building tall tower!

All this physical development seems to have slowed down your verbal. In fact, while you constantly babble still, you rarely use the words now that you even knew before, and never on command.

The only exception to this month's cheerfulness is in the eating category which continues to be challenging apart from feeding you peas and chicken nuggets at every meal...well, to be honest, you eat fish sticks and carrots pretty well too, you occasionally eat pb&j (or at least the PB&j minus the bread; see last post), occasionally grilled cheese, most fruits, and all crackers, but not a fan of much else-- i.e. hot dogs, deli meat, cheese by itself, eggs, hamburger, meatballs, rice, broccoli, cauliflower, etc...

Any wonder then that you have continued to grow! You now wear almost entirely 18mo. plus clothes (with the exception of the waist of pants which is 12 months, not length unfortunately). You are also still wearing size 4 diapers during the day so that I can use them up, but you are really in size 5 all the time due to all the leaks we have in the size 4. You also wear all size 6 1/2 shoes now.

This month you did attend 3 costume parties, go to the Old MacDonald Farm petting zoo, had several playgroups at the park, and had your first professional haircut.

Our first party--a Sunday school party

    The second--a kids playgroup party

Imagine trying to get 23 children, ages 2 and under, to sit still and lined up on a couch! This was the result...

We decided it might be more successful to include the 20 mothers as well.

the third--Trunk or Treat at our church.

You liked the Llama at the petting zoo

and forget the little pumpkins--you wanted one almost as large as you are!

On our first trip to the first park, all you really wanted to do was chase the birds--lucky they are faster than you! (the swinging was fun too)

The second trip shows your true colors! You are ever the independent roamer. As someone so aptly described, you will be the chap who will visit someone's house and open the medicine cabinet just out of curiosity. Our trip to Rob Fleming Park was no exception. I spent the entire time chasing you around as you explored it all--slides, open fields, stairs, pavilion, climbing rocks...

and again with your first pro haircut

I look forward to seeing what next month holds as we head on our first plane flight.

PS speaking of planes, you are fascinated with them! Any time you hear one, you crane your neck in the sky and point at it. In fact, the only time you stopped running around at Rob Fleming park was to point at the model airplanes that two men were flying.
