Bananas and such

Just an update...

I "tubbed" my carrots last night. Meaning, all the commercial baby food tubs I had been saving were put to good use with the carrots I cooked a couple of days ago. Let's just say that I spent $2.50 on a 2 lb. bag of carrots (don't remember the exact price, but I am sure it was not more than this). When I cooked them and added the water, I ended up with 18 very full tubs. That means...if you buy your Gerber baby food with 2 tubs for 85c (they are 95c at HEB but I think a bit cheaper at Walmart), you would have spent $7.65. I essentially saved about $5 in making my own carrots. In total it took very little hands-on time. Grating, boiling, then pureeing. I could have probably diluted them a bit more too... And for bananas? I made one banana last night. It might have cost about 10c. (perhaps less) It filled 3 tubs. That means $1.28 worth of commercial food for 10c. All for about 1 minute of work. This equates to getting paid about $70/hour! Water? How much? I just add until it has the right consistency (using the commercial food as a standard). A little more or less will probably not be an issue for your baby. I think a recipe of mine calls for 2 cups fruit or veggies with 2/3 c. water. I did not add water to the banana but probably added more than that to the carrots...Sorry, this is just how I cook.

Love it! Thanks, Margaret! I'm all about making that kind of hourly wage. Do you think Kyle will let me start spending like I earn $70/hr if I begin making my own baby food? I didn't think so either...;)

And your hourly wages come with benefits... you get to see the chow hound beg for more and smile when his belly is full.

Great info! You've convinced me. If it's really that easy, I think I'll do the same! Thanks!
