"good for me" part 2

Part 2:  Shame on me for taking so long to post... but as my sister so astutely commented on the last post entitled shame on me, "it should read 'good for me.'  Never feel shame for living in a stage which is short on time."  Thus, this and the next few posts have been renamed...

Here are some young adult books read over the past two years.

My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett -- OK so this one I read last year (close to two years ago!) to D for school.  It is one of my favorites!  It is so preposterous!  It is lovely!  And if you can find a copy with the lovely grease crayon drawings in color, it is even better!  It is the story of the narrator's father who sets off on an adventure to rescue a dragon using all sorts of items from his backpack, like MacGyver.

The Apple and the Arrow by Mary and Conrad Buff -- another school read for David last year.  I think it was a little mature for a Kindergartner (at least my son).  It is the story of William Tell as told by his son.  It goes into the history of the Swiss revolt against the Austrians.  Not a favorite.

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes -- again, another school read last year for David.  It definitely had potential and I know it is a classic, but most certainly not one I would read again.  It is a story about bullying and if you deal with that issue, it is probably worthwhile to read.  In our case, it was just a bit unpleasant to focus so much on girls who were so unpleasant to each other.

Charlotte's Web  by EB White -- a school read for David this year.  David really enjoyed this read-aloud.  It is a fun book and a classic.  I must admit though, I had forgotten how Dickens-like this book was.  One sentence to describe anything took up half a page and was explained from every angle possible.  Otherwise, the plot of the book would have likely only covered just a few mere pages.

Five True Dog Stories  by Margaret Davidson -- a school read for David.  It was a sweet little book about five different dogs.  Very easy read.  Heroic, interesting and great if your child loves animals!

The Ultimate Lego Book  by DK publishers-- As a lego fanatic, I found this book really interesting. It goes through the Lego history and changes...too bad it was published in 1999.  Would have loved to see an updated version.  DK publishing is excellent for their illustrations.  David loved pouring over this book too.  Much of the book can be "read" without reading.
